Engine sensors
P0113 — Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High
The IAT sensor signal is higher than the normal range, which the ECU reads as extremely cold air (usually an open circuit). The ECU may enrich the mixture.
Common causes
- Open circuit or broken wire to the IAT sensor
- Faulty IAT sensor
- Corroded or loose connector
- Sensor ground fault
- Faulty MAF sensor with built-in IAT
Symptoms
- Slightly higher fuel use
- Rough idle when cold
- Black smoke in some cases
- Check engine light
How to check
- Check the connector and wiring for an open circuit
- Read the IAT value; an open circuit often shows a very low temperature such as -40 deg C
- Measure the sensor resistance and compare it with the temperature
- Replace the sensor if needed
Can you keep driving?
Usually drivable. The effect is small, but repair it so fuel control stays accurate.

Frequently asked questions
- What does P0113 mean?
- The IAT circuit voltage is above range, which usually points to an open circuit or a bad sensor.
- Why does the scan tool show -40 with P0113?
- An open circuit makes the ECU read the lowest possible temperature, which is often shown as -40.
General reference information. It does not replace a diagnosis on your own vehicle. The same code can have different causes depending on make, model year and engine; check the manufacturer's documentation or ask a technician with a scan tool.
