Variable valve timing and engine timing
P0012 — "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)
The camshaft on bank 1 is more retarded (later) than the angle the ECU commanded. Valve timing is late, which hurts idle quality, power and emissions.
Common causes
- Low or dirty engine oil
- Faulty or sticking VVT solenoid
- Clogged oil passage or solenoid screen
- Worn camshaft phaser
- Stretched timing chain or slipped timing belt
Symptoms
- Rough idle
- Loss of power
- Poor fuel economy
- Check engine light
How to check
- Check oil level and quality, and change oil if needed
- Test the VVT solenoid and its wiring and connector
- Clean the solenoid screen and inspect oil passages
- Check cam-to-crank correlation on a scan tool and inspect chain or belt condition
Can you keep driving?
Usually drivable for a short time, but the cause (oil flow or timing drive wear) can become expensive if ignored, so have it checked soon.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between P0011 and P0012?
- P0011 means the camshaft is too far advanced; P0012 means it is too far retarded compared with the ECU's command.
- Will P0012 clear by itself?
- Only if the cause was temporary, such as dirty oil that was changed. If the cause remains, the code returns.
