Speed and idle control
P0507 — Idle Control System RPM Higher Than Expected
The engine idle speed is higher than the target the ECU sets. Extra air is usually entering the engine, or the idle control cannot close properly.
Common causes
- Vacuum or intake air leak
- Dirty or sticking throttle body or idle air control valve
- Faulty throttle position sensor
- Faulty coolant temperature sensor
- PCV valve stuck open or leaking
Symptoms
- High idle speed
- Idle that hunts up and down
- Engine revs on its own
- Check engine light
How to check
- Smoke-test the intake for leaks
- Clean the throttle body and idle air valve
- Check hoses, PCV valve and brake booster line
- Check throttle position and coolant temperature readings
Can you keep driving?
Usually drivable, but a high idle can make braking and parking less smooth. Repair it soon.
