Fuel and air metering

P0087 — Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low

The fuel rail pressure measured by the sensor is lower than the pressure the ECU requested. The engine may not get enough fuel, especially under load. It is common on direct-injection and diesel engines.

Severity: High

This content is under review.

Common causes

  • Weak or worn fuel pump (low or high pressure)
  • Clogged fuel filter
  • Leaking injector or pressure regulator
  • Faulty fuel rail pressure sensor
  • Low fuel level or restriction in the fuel line

Symptoms

  • Loss of power, especially accelerating
  • Hard starting or stalling
  • Hesitation and jerking
  • Check engine light, possible limp mode

How to check

  1. Check for fuel level, fuel quality and a clogged fuel filter
  2. Read live rail pressure versus the requested value
  3. Test the supply pump and the pressure sensor signal
  4. Inspect lines for leaks and check injector and regulator operation

Can you keep driving?

Not advised. The engine may stall in traffic or enter limp mode, and a lean condition can damage the engine. Have it checked before normal driving.

Frequently asked questions

What does P0087 mean?
The measured fuel rail pressure is below the target the ECU requested.
Can a clogged fuel filter cause P0087?
Yes. A restricted filter is one of the first things to check because it starves the pump and lowers pressure.

General reference information. It does not replace a diagnosis on your own vehicle. The same code can have different causes depending on make, model year and engine; check the manufacturer's documentation or ask a technician with a scan tool.
