Evaporative emission (EVAP)

P0441 — Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow

The ECU detects that the amount of fuel vapour flowing from the EVAP canister into the intake is not what it expects. The purge valve or its lines may be stuck, blocked or leaking.

Severity: Low

Common causes

  • Purge valve stuck open or closed
  • Blocked or cracked purge line
  • Faulty vent valve
  • Saturated or damaged charcoal canister
  • Faulty purge valve wiring

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Rough idle or hard starting after refuelling
  • Fuel smell
  • Failed emissions test

How to check

  1. Command the purge valve with a scan tool and check whether it clicks and holds vacuum
  2. Inspect the purge line for kinks, cracks and blockage
  3. Check the vent valve and canister
  4. Check the wiring and connector

Can you keep driving?

Usually drivable, but a purge valve stuck open can cause hard starting after refuelling. Repair it soon.
