P0217 — Engine Coolant Over Temperature Condition

The ECU has detected that the engine coolant temperature went above the safe limit. Overheating can quickly damage the head gasket, cylinder head and engine.

Severity: High

Common causes

  • Low coolant level or a leak
  • Failed water pump or broken drive belt
  • Stuck-closed thermostat
  • Clogged radiator or failed cooling fan
  • Blown head gasket or faulty radiator cap

Symptoms

  • Temperature warning light or gauge in the red
  • Steam or sweet smell under the hood
  • Loss of power
  • Coolant loss

How to check

  1. Let the engine cool completely, then check coolant level and look for leaks
  2. Check the fan operation, belt and water pump
  3. Check the thermostat and radiator flow
  4. Pressure-test the cooling system and test for combustion gases in the coolant

Can you keep driving?

Do not drive. Stop in a safe place and shut the engine off; driving while overheated can destroy the engine.

Frequently asked questions

What does P0217 mean?
The ECU detected the coolant temperature above the safe limit.
Can I keep driving with P0217?
No. Stop and let the engine cool; continued driving can cause severe engine damage.
