P0455 — Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (Large Leak)

The ECU found a large leak in the EVAP system, often because the fuel cap is missing or not tightened, or a hose is disconnected.

Severity: Low

Common causes

  • Fuel cap missing, loose or damaged
  • Disconnected or broken EVAP hose
  • Cracked canister or filler neck
  • Stuck-open purge or vent valve
  • Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Fuel smell
  • Failed emissions test
  • Usually no driving symptoms

How to check

  1. Check that the fuel cap is present, correct and tight
  2. Inspect all EVAP hoses for disconnections or cracks
  3. Use a smoke machine to find the leak
  4. Test the purge and vent valves and the pressure sensor

Can you keep driving?

Safe to drive. It affects emissions only; repair it soon.
